About Scholardo

Scholardo is a native macOS research workspace, built on one bet: an AI agent should be a participant in the research, not a chat panel bolted onto a reference manager.

Why it exists

Research tooling today is split down the middle. The reference manager holds your library, your annotations and the page you are on, and knows nothing about your agent. The agent can read, write and run code, and cannot see a single one of your sources — so you copy a passage across, and paste the answer back.

Scholardo removes that errand. The agent and the researcher share one library, one set of annotations, and the same live reading context: through 40+ native MCP tools, any MCP-compatible agent can search your library, read the highlights you made, and write citations straight into your manuscript. This is not a chat window embedded in a reader — it is the research material itself made available to the agent.

How it is built

  • Native first: a native app for macOS 14 and later, universal across Apple Silicon and Intel. No Electron, no web shell.
  • Local first: sources, annotations, notes and session history live on your own disk, in local SQLite under ~/.scholardo/. No cloud sync, and no account for local use.
  • No telemetry: the app collects no usage statistics, behavioural analytics or crash reports. The privacy policy has the detail.
  • Your keys, your calls: AI features run on API keys you supply, held in the macOS Keychain, with requests going straight to the provider. Search, annotation, citation and web capture need no key at all.

How it is funded

Scholardo is closed-source commercial software, independently built and self-funded. It has exactly one revenue source: software licences, annual or one-time. No advertising, no data sold, and no investors to show a growth curve to.

That is the same decision as the ones above, seen from the other side: a product that does not make money from your data can afford to leave all of it on your machine.
